Postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Research and Studies of Sociology (CIES-IUL) of the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) and associate researcher of the Emigration Observatory (OEm) of the same institute. Mara is currently carrying out a research project on trafficking in women for sexual exploitation in order to study the policies and practices for the protection of trafficked persons in Portugal. She holds a doctorate in Theory and Social Research from Sapienza, University of Rome, with a dissertation based on an investigation on prostitution of minors and "sexual tourism" in the Dominican Republic. She has participated in several research projects in Europe and South America, integrating academic research groups and action-research projects of different organizations. Her research interests are related to sex work, migration and gender. Invited Professor to the course on Women Empowerment in the XXI century at the University of Lisbon (ISCTE- IUL) and AIM Overseas, and Visiting professor Migration and Development Master’s Degree program at the Sapienza University of Rome.
